Our Reach & Continuity

Impact

Impact at SEWA Cooperative Federation is shaped over time. It is reflected in cooperatives that continue to function across decades, an evolving leadership and collective enterprises that adapt as conditions change.

What Endures

Endurance is one of the clearest markers of impact. Several women’s cooperatives supported by the Federation have continued over long periods.

In some cases, impact is visible in cooperatives that have been revived after periods of difficulty. In others, it shows up in new leaders stepping forward and reshaping how institutions function.

Leadership Over Time

Leadership within cooperatives evolves through experience, mentoring, and shared responsibility. SEWA Cooperative Federation has supported this process through training, peer learning, and leadership-focused initiatives.
More recently, dedicated programmes have focused on strengthening leadership among elected board members and creating space for younger women to participate meaningfully.

Responding to Change

Women’s cooperatives operate in environments marked by disruption. Over time, they have adapted to crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing climate stress, and changing market conditions.

These responses vary by sector and context. What remains constant is the effort to adjust without fragmenting—to protect livelihoods while remaining collective.

Engaging Beyond the Cooperative

The Federation also engages with institutions and policy spaces that influence how cooperatives operate. This includes contributing to research, participating in forums, and producing policy briefs grounded in cooperative experience.

Change at this level is gradual and cumulative, shaped through sustained engagement rather than isolated interventions.
