Our WESS Model of Work

SEWA Cooperative Federation works as a Women’s Enterprise Support System (WESS), strengthening the shared systems that women’s cooperatives need to function, grow, and respond to change.

As a WESS, we act as a connective layer working with cooperatives on leadership, enterprise decisions, financial systems, and visibility, while also engaging with institutions and policy environments that shape how they operate.

We work with both long-standing cooperatives and those that are newly formed or being revived. The nature of support varies based on where a cooperative is in its journey and the priorities identified by women leaders.

What the WESS Framework Supports

Capacity Building

Leadership development, cooperative education, and enterprise skills shaped through practice.

Governance Support

Strengthening decision-making processes, accountability and collective functioning.

Business Development

Supporting enterprise growth, market engagement, and sector specific strategies.

Financial Management

Building systems for planning, cash flow management, and sustainability.

Research and Advocacy

Documenting practice, generating evidence, and contributing to policy engagement.

Communications

Supporting visibility, storytelling and collective voice across platforms.

Together, these areas form a support system that responds to the realities of women’s cooperatives and remains grounded in cooperative principles.
